Homes For Our Troops is a national non-profit organization that assists America's disabled and injured veterans' by coordinating fund raising efforts and donations of building materials and professional labor for the building of a new home, or adaption of a current home, for handicapped accessibility - all at no cost to the veteran.
CUNA has been very involved with this important charity, and credit unions and credit union leagues across the country, including the Massachusetts Credit Union League, Advantis Credit Union, Mazuma Credit Union, Greylock Federal Credit Union and the Missouri Credit Union Association are very active in their support.
I don't think there is a better example of credit unions living the "People helping People" philosophy of our movement. Massachusetts League President Dan Egan summed it up perfectly when he said, "There is no better way for us to mark the 100th anniversary of the founding of the credit union movement than to demonstrate our philosophy of people helping people by lending a hand to these men and women who have given so much for us."
One of the reasons credit unions can continue to help those in need is because members have actual ownership in their credit union. You can have a say in what your credit union does, including assisting a cause your community believes in, like Homes For Our Troops and supporting programs that get behind U.S. companies and provide discounts for credit union members, like Invest in America. These are just two of the many examples of how credit unions put their members first.
