Generally, these financing offers are in lieu of consumer cash incentives. So, you can either take the low financing rate offered by the dealer or you can take the consumer cash incentive.

An even better deal? Credit unions historically offer low loan rates. Question: My credit union doesn't want to spend any money to promote Invest in America

The Invest in America program has always offered marketing materials at low or no cost. The printed pieces simply need to be downloaded from the Love My Credit Union website and printed at the credit union or your preferred printer. Additionally, there are many tools that credit unions can use that don't cost anything at all: email, on-hold messages, newsletter articles, print and on-line ads, logos and web banners.

Invest in America offers FREE printed materials to all credit unions signed up to support the program. Credit unions can order pre-printed inserts and posters all at NO COST to the credit union and there are FREE TO DOWNLOAD email, on-hold messages, newsletter articles, print and on-line ads, logos and web banners to use as well.

Question: The dealers are just going to steal the financing so why should my credit union promote Invest in America?

You can see by the number of loans funded by credit unions compared to the number of autos purchased that this is just not the case. Of the over 270,000 cars purchased through the Invest in America program, credit unions funded over 194,000 of them - 80% of the loans were funded by credit unions.

The Invest in America program gives your credit union a new way to market auto loans and generate excitement. And why wouldn't you want members to know they could save money? Look at it this way, if you don't tell your members about Invest in America and they find out about it from the dealer, odds are greater that the dealer will get the financing instead of your credit union because you may have alienated your member by not telling them about the discount.

GM, Credit Unions and Invest in America

This past Monday, GM announced it was back in the black. The company's $865 million first quarter profit marked its first three month period out of the red since a $891 million profit in the second quarter of 2007. Additionally, revenue rose 40% in the first quarter of the year and the company announced they are adding more production lines in North America.

This news comes after last month's announcement from GM that they had paid back the $8.1 billion in TARP loans they received from the U.S. and Canadian governments - about 5 years earlier than they anticipated. While the governments still have partial ownership of GM, paying back the loans before they are due is a good sign that the American auto industry is on its way to reducing government ownership and on the road to recovery.

There has been an increase in American car makers' approval rankings. Credit Unions and Auto Leasing

In this tough economy, credit unions have made great strides in capturing more of the auto lending market. CUDL reports that credit unions saw a 3.8% increase in their auto lending market share in 2009, most of which came from the captives. CUDL also reported that credit unions were the fifth largest lender of auto loans in 2009, up two places from 2008.

Facing tough competition, 0% financing from captive finance sources (although as we've discussed before, credit union members who take advantage of low credit union rates, use the Invest in America discount and the manufacturers' cash alternative save more than if they take the 0% financing offer from the dealer) and an ever changing financial landscape, now is a great time for credit unions to consider expanding their loan portfolios and enter the world of leasing.

Toyota and Honda, Is the Dependability Still There?

The Toyota recalls began with 4.3 million vehicles due to floor mats jamming the accelerator pedal. Toyota's accelerator pedal issues have to date resulted in nearly 9 million recalls worldwide and the suspension of sales on 8 of their vehicles. Then, news broke that Toyota's recall wasn't completely voluntary:

"The reason Toyota decided to do the recall and to stop manufacturing is that we asked them to," Transportation Secretary Raymond LaHood said. In an interview with WGN radio in Chicago, Mr. Hood went on, "We were the ones that really met with Toyota, our department, our safety folks and told them, 'you've got to do the recall.' They decided to stop the manufacturing.

Last week, Congress decided to hold a hearing on February 25th to find out what Toyota knew about the error and how long they knew about it before they acted on it.

In addition to their recall is their decision to close a plant in California which will lay off 5,000 workers and potentially affect the livelihood of 45,000 people employed in support industries. The plant Toyota is closing manufactures the Corolla, which was the number one selling car in this past summer's Cash for Clunkers program. In a letter to the Prime Minister of Japan, Yukio Hatoyama, the UAW stated:

"It's outrageous that the number one-selling car in Cash for Clunkers was the Corolla, the car that is manufactured in the NUMMI plant. After receiving more money in this bailout program than any other company, Toyota is turning its back on American workers and American taxpayers by closing the plant in the state where they sell the most cars in the U.S., shipping these jobs to Japan and then importing the cars back to the United States for sale," said King.

"Toyota management is seeking to move work from auto transport companies that have delivered their new cars and trucks for decades," Hoffa said. "The loss of this work could lead to the destruction of the largest auto transport companies in the country and the loss of thousands of good, middle class jobs. Toyota promised to support American communities; they're instead threatening the very types of good jobs that our communities need in this time of economic crisis."

Not a great week for them.

Then, to add even more woes to Japan's auto industry, late last week the news broke of Honda's recall of over 600,000 vehicles worldwide due to a window problem.

So, based on these developments, I thought now would be a good time to revisit the question of why you should purchase an American made vehicle.

Toyota and Honda's reputations for safety and dependability helped increase their sales worldwide and gave the impression that their dependability was better than that of the Big Three. With the recent news, I think we can agree that is not necessarily the case. Even months before the recalls, American made vehicles were being recognized for their dependability. In the J.D. Power and Associates 2009 Vehicle Dependability Study, Buick tied Jaguar as the most dependable brand while GM ranked in the top 3 of 8 categories. U.S. News and World Reports ranked the 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid, 2010 Chevrolet Malibu and 2010 Ford Fusion as the top 3 affordable midsized cards. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety listed the Buick LaCrosse, Chevrolet Malibu, Chrysler Sebring, Dodge Avenger, Dodge Journey and Jeep Patriot as Top Safety Picks for 2010 - only two Hondas and not one Toyota were chosen.

As for foreign companies supporting the U.S. economy as much as the Big Three? The UAW letter highlights that discrepancy; additionally, a research study by the Center for Automotive Research showed that at the end of 2007, international producers employed roughly 113,000 people in the United States, compared to the Big Three who employed 239,941. And, even though the foreign vehicles are made in America, the profits don't stay here, they go back to that auto company's country and support their economy.

For many of us, safety and dependability are deciding factors when purchasing a vehicle. Toyota and Honda can no longer tout that they are more dependable than the Big Three. Our communities are also directly affected by the auto industry. Toyota cannot say that it is standing by its promise to support our communities, and the Big Three can.

Over 229,000 GM and Chrysler vehicles have been sold through the Invest in America program. This has helped reinvest $5 billion back into the U.S. economy. This is money that is returned to our communities and directly impacts our schools, roads, community services and economy as a whole. What you spend your money on really does make a difference. Homes For Our Troops is a national non-profit organization that assists America's disabled and injured veterans' by coordinating fund raising efforts and donations of building materials and professional labor for the building of a new home, or adaption of a current home, for handicapped accessibility - all at no cost to the veteran.

Cash for Clunkers and New Car Inventories

The Cash for Clunkers program had many positive affects on the auto industry and our economy. Key was the increase in the Seasonally Adjusted Annual Rate (SAAR) of new vehicles. For the first half of 2009, the SAAR of new vehicle sales was less than 10 million; in August, that number jumped to 14.1 million. What did that mean? When dealers opened their doors on September 1st, there were 49% fewer vehicles available for them to sell.

This is good news for the auto industry and their service and support industries. "The higher sales levels caused manufacturers to boost production schedules and dealers to increase orders." Plants that have been closed have re-opened and workers are back on the line. Used car inventories are low and their prices have increase 5.1% from last year, due to a combination of Cash for Clunkers and an overall decrease in new vehicle inventories. For the auto industry, Cash for Clunkers was a success.

As an automotive lender, it is important for credit unions to be aware of business conditions and events in the automotive industry. Until inventories are replenished and consumer demand once again increases, competition for auto loans will likely increase. Your credit union will need to monitor your rates against your competitors and continue to offer the best deal possible to your members in order to remain competitive. Be sure to stay abreast of what's happening in the auto industry so you can manage your credit union's finances.

With President Obama signing an extension for "Cash for Clunkers" - 3 billion dollars more - consumers have more time to trade in their gas guzzlers and buy a more fuel efficient car. Politicians and auto industry leaders are touting the effectiveness of the program and the jump start it has given to the ailing auto industry.

"Cash for Clunkers" has had an immediate impact on car sales and credit union loans across the country. According to Edmunds.com, in just the first tow weeks, the "Cash for Clunkers" program sent the auto industry's annualized U.S. sales to double what it was the first half of 2009. While it's too early to pull exact figures, credit unions are telling us that they are pre-authorizing and funding more car loans now than they have all year. The "Cash for Clunkers" program has created a surge in lending for credit unions across the country.

The American auto industry is reaping the benefits of the "Cash for Clunkers" program:

Combined, the Big Three have brought in 45% of all new car sales.
GM has sold the most cars out of all manufacturers - 18.7%
Ford Motor Company achieved its first year-over-year sales increase since November 2007
Chrysler's Jeep Wrangler, Jeep Compass, Dodge Avenger, Chrysler Sebring, PT Cruiser, Dodge Caliber, Dodge Grand Caravan and Chrysler Town and Country are in short supply, with dealers running out of inventory on their lots.

Chrysler Rebates & Cash for Clunkers- Save More with a Low Rate Loan From Your Credit Union

Yesterday, Chrysler announced their "Double CA$H For Your Old Car" Program which offers consumers up to a $4,500 cash rebate or 0% financing when they purchase a select Chrysler, Dodge or Jeep vehicle. A great incentive, as a credit union member, your best savings will come when you take the rebate and a low rate auto loan from your credit union.

Why the rebate instead of the 0% financing offer? As we mentioned in an earlier blog post, The Myth of 0% Financing, you save more money when you take the rebate because it's the final cost of the vehicle that's important, not the finance rate.

Let's look at this example. You want to purchase a 2009 Chrysler Sebring. You are trading in a 1993 Toyota 4Runner. You can either take the $4,500 rebate from Chrysler and get a great low 5.50& auto loan from your credit union or you can take the 0% financing. Which is better?

Total savings from financing at your credit union vs. the 0% loan: $1,708.

Here's how they both break down:

Remember, financing only affects the interest you'll pay on your vehicle loan. Rebates reduce the total price of the vehicle. So, if you qualify and take the 0% loan, you'll pay more than if you took the 5.50% and $4,500 in rebates. Why? Because the total cost of the vehicle is more without the rebates. Bottom line: the total amount you'll pay for the car is what's important, not the finance rate.

Do your homework and be sure to stop by your credit union and get pre-approved for your vehicle loan before you head to the dealership. Be ready to negotiate and walk out with the vehicle, rebates and loan payment you want.

Boycott GM?

Some pundits have called for boycotting General Motors, declaring that we should not support American auto companies that have been subsidized by the U.S. Government. Why - it's not as if the auto industry is the only industry that is subsidized - the government has helped and subsidized many industries for years. Do we boycott food products because of farm subsidies? Do we boycott electricity or natural gas because of utilities subsidization? Boycotting GM will only harm our economy. For each taxpayer, this means never getting back the money we loaned to them. For millions of American workers it means unemployment - which will be an even larger burden on our government. The debate needs to be moved from how we feel about the government's involvement and politics in general to what is best for American workers and our country.

Let's look at some facts about GM and the American auto industry*:

GM employs nearly as many Americans as all foreign automakers combined
GM operates more plants in the United States than all foreign automakers combined
Toyota employs less than half as many American workers as GM
If Detroit used as little "domestic content" as foreign automakers, about $49 billion in U.S. parts sales - and 1 million jobs - could have been moved overseas last year
Automakers are our largest exporter and one of the biggest buyers of steel, rubber, glass, electronics and computer chips
Nearly 1 in 10 scientists in the U.S. work for American automakers or their suppliers.

In our June 9th blog, Why Buy An American Made Vehicle, we highlighted a staggering statistic - over 3 million jobs depend on the viability of the Big Three. It's clear from these facts that a boycott of GM would not just affect the auto industry and Michigan; it would have a devastating effect on industries and families across the country.

The bottom line is that GM needs to improve their finances. The best way for them to do that is to sell more vehicles. If GM's finances improve, the government can diverge from the company, American jobs will be saved and taxpayers can get a return on their money. If a boycott is successful, not enough vehicles are sold, the company goes under, millions of people lose their jobs and taxpayers do not get their money back. Which one of these scenarios seems like a better option for our country to you?

We need to keep the focus on the American workers and the jobs across multiple industries that depend on GM and the U.S. auto industry as a whole. Cash for Clunkers plus Invest in America Rebates - How Much Could You Save

The premise is simple, trade in your old "gas guzzler" and receive between $3,500 and $4,500 trade in when you purchase a new, more gas efficient vehicle. The restrictions are minimal:

You must have owned the vehicle you are trading in for at least one year
The vehicle you are trading in must have been made in 1984 or later
The vehicle you are trading in must get a combined (city and highway) 18 miles per gallon or less
The vehicle you plan on purchasing must not exceed $45,000

The benefits are huge:

You receive a great trade in amount
Your new vehicle will be more fuel efficient which will save you money on gas
Using your Credit Union Member Discount will provide you with even more rebates

Let's take this example:

You have a 1999 Chevrolet Tahoe that gets 14 miles per gallon. You want to purchase a 2009 Chevy Malibu 2LT which gets 33 miles per gallon. With the Cash for Clunkers program, you will receive a voucher for $4,500 when you trade in your Tahoe. Pretty good deal, hunh?

Why Buy an American Made Vehicle

There's a lot of talk these days about the American auto industry. One conversation that generates a lot of discussion is what defines an American made vehicle. Is it where it's made, where it comes from or where the profits go? For the sake of argument (and believe us there is a lot around this issue) we are defining an American made vehicle as one that is built by an American based company whose profits are returned to the United States, regardless of where its parts are made or where it is assembled. Why are we defining it this way? When you purchase a vehicle made by a company whose profits return to the U.S., the money you spent on that vehicle is re-invested in America and directly impacts the community services we all depend on. What could be more American than that?

So, why should you buy an American made vehicle? Let's look at some of the myths about the Big Three and the auto industry as a whole.

What happens to Detroit won't affect me. Not true. According to the Commerce Department, every job in auto assembly and parts production supports 2.4 additional jobs in the country. Based on this, three separate studies have reported that a major loss at the Big Three could result in up to 3 million jobs lost in the United States. American owned auto companies are one of our country's largest exporters and one of the largest buyers of raw materials. What happens to the Big Three impacts almost every industry in our country.

The dependability of the Big Three vehicles just isn't there. Again, not true. In the J.D. Power and Associates 2009 Vehicle Dependability Study, Buick tied Jaguar as the most dependable brand while GM ranked in the top 3 in 8 categories. U.S. News and World Reports ranked the 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid, 2010 Chevrolet Malibu and 2010 Ford Fusion as the top 3 affordable midsized cars. GM and Ford have both rolled out payment protection plans that cover your payments for a certain period of time if you lose your job and GM has a plan to help consumers who purchase a GM vehicle now, but won't be able to trade it in because they owe more than it is worth. What's more dependable than that?

Foreign auto companies employ American workers so they help our economy. Yes, foreign owned car companies employ American workers - but not as many as American owned car companies. A research study by the Center for Automotive Research showed that at the end of 2007, international producers employed roughly 113,000 people in the United States, compared to the Big Three who employed 239,341. And, even though the foreign cars are made in America, the profits don't stay here, they go back to that auto company's country and support their economy, not ours.

The foreign automakers haven't asked for a bailout. Not yet, but three - Toyota, Honda and Mazda - may soon.

140,000 GM and Chrysler vehicles have been sold through the Invest in America program. This has helped reinvest $2.8 billion back into the U.S. economy. This is money that is returned to our communities and directly impacts our schools, roads, community services and economy as a whole. What your spend your money on really does make a difference. Do some research before you buy - seek out a high quality American made vehicle, and you won't regret it.
